June 18, 2026
With just days to go until voters in North Acton return to the polls on Thursday 25 June, the by-election triggered by the abrupt resignation of Green councillor Simon Anthony has entered its final stage.
Parties have significantly intensified their ground operations in the final stretch. Labour, the Greens and the Liberal Democrats have all been running regular canvassing sessions, while the Conservatives and Reform UK have focused on targeted leafleting and doorstep conversations in the streets around Noel Road, West Acton and the Old Oak Lane corridor.
Turnout in by-elections is typically lower than in full council elections, but campaigners across parties report higher-than-expected engagement — a sign that residents are paying close attention to the unusual circumstances that triggered the vote.
Labour’s candidate, former Walpole councillor Gareth Shaw, has shifted his messaging in recent days to focus on “restoring stability” after what the party describes as “avoidable disruption” caused by the Green resignation.
Local Labour figures have been more visible in the ward this week, including councillors from neighbouring wards signalling the party’s determination to regain the seat it narrowly missed in May.
The Green Party has been working to reassure voters that the circumstances of Simon Anthony’s departure should not reflect on their new candidate, Marijn van de Geer who they stress is “standing on her own record”.
The Liberal Democrats, buoyed by a string of by-election gains across Ealing in recent years, have stepped up their efforts behind Abdi Ahmed while the Conservative candidate Sally Gorman, the only contender who stood in North Acton in May, has been campaigning on a message of “value for money” and “a safer, cleaner Acton”.
Craig Smith, leader of the Ealing Community Independents, has continued to centre his campaign on resident-led decision-making. In recent days he has been particularly vocal about the future of children’s centres, the impact of development around Old Oak and the need for “genuine consultation rather than box-ticking”.
Reform UK candidate Jonathan Notley has been focusing on transport, housing pressures and dissatisfaction with both national and local government.
