A man was forced to jump from a window to escape a blaze caused by an e-scooter battery on Noel Road, Acton, on Monday afternoon (15 July).

The incident took place at a house converted into flats and was reported shortly after 1.30pm. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Acton, Park Royal, Ealing and Chiswick stations were called to the scene.

The fire broke out in the entrance hallway of a first-floor flat where an e-scooter was charging. The blaze quickly blocked the main exit route, trapping the occupants and forcing one man to leap from a window to safety. He was treated by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and taken to hospital as a precaution.

Five people managed to escape the property before the Brigade arrived. Part of the first floor was damaged by the flames and the fire was under control by 2.33pm.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said, “If you keep an e-bike or e-scooter indoors, make sure it is never stored or charged in an escape route. Hallways, stairwells and areas by the front door should always be kept clear. These vehicles should ideally be charged in a separate room with a closing door, so you can isolate a fire if one starts.”

Since the start of 2023, the Brigade has dealt with an average of one e-bike or e-scooter fire every two days across London.

The spokesperson added,“We recognise the role e-scooters and e-bikes play in low-emission transport, but their popularity is bringing real risks. Unsafe charging, second-hand batteries, and the use of non-compatible chargers significantly increase the chance of fire. We urge owners to follow our #ChargeSafe advice available on our website.”

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by the failure of a lithium-ion battery.
