Stirling Road Recycling Centre Site Reopens for One Day

The long-anticipated reopening of the Stirling Road Recycling Centre moved a step closer this Saturday (19 July) with the site hosting a one-off event.
Now dubbed ‘ReActon’ by Ealing Council, it was the venue for a free cycling themed family event from 11am to 3pm.
There were free bike repairs by Collect4Reuse’s trained mechanics, second-hand bikes available to buy and activities and prizes for all ages.
Some alternative inventions were on display, all running on pedal power including can crushers.
The event was organised by Ealing Council, in partnership with West London Waste Authority and Suez. The council says that more events are planned for this summer including a school uniform swap and giveaway on Saturday 16 August. However, there is no firm date for the restoration of a permanent recycling facility. It has already been confirmed that, when opened, ReActon will not be taking general waste, recycling or gardening waste. It is hoped to provide a space for residents to repair, reuse and recycle electronics, bicycles, furniture and clothes.
The centre closed permanently at 4 pm on Friday, 26 November 2021 for budgetary reasons with suggestions that the site might be sold for redevelopment. However, no sale ever took place possibly as the disposal was complicated by potential issues with contamination.
It was originally scheduled to reopen last July and a contract was put out for tender for the construction of a Training and Workshop Area, Food Distribution Area, and welfare facilities. However, nothing has been built on the site to date.
Cllr Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, said, “Events like this are a brilliant way to bring the community together and show how fun sustainability can be.
“ReActon is all about rethinking waste and reusing what we already have – and what better way to do that than with bikes that surprise and delight?”
The council says that residents can take bulky household waste, garden waste, and recycling to its tip in Greenford which is open Friday to Tuesday (including weekends and bank holidays), from 8am to 4pm. Ealing residents are also allowed to use facilities in neighbouring boroughs such as the one on Townmead Road in Richmond.
