The Tabard Theatre opens February with a sharp-witted new historical drama that brings two towering figures of eighteenth-century culture face to face. Round About Hogarth, written and directed by Gareth Armstrong, receives its world premiere in Chiswick, exploring rivalry, friendship and artistic ego with humour and warmth .

Set against the lively backdrop of Georgian London, the play imagines a meeting between painter and satirist William Hogarth – Chiswick’s most famous resident – and the revolutionary actor-manager David Garrick. Each man is at the height of his influence, and each is convinced that his art form holds the greatest power. Garrick champions the emotional immediacy of the stage, while Hogarth counters with the enduring moral force of paint and print.

As their debate unfolds, Round About Hogarth reveals more than professional sparring. Beneath the barbed exchanges lies a fragile friendship, shared passions, and a mutual fondness for good wine, as well as the insecurities and ambitions that drive creative greatness. The result is a fast-paced, intimate two-hander that blends historical insight with modern theatrical energy .

Miles Richardson takes on the role of Garrick, with Terence Frisch as Hogarth, in a production that runs for approximately 75 minutes without an interval. Armstrong, whose previous Tabard premieres include A Critical Stage and Fondly Remembered, is known for bringing historical debates vividly to life, and this new play continues that tradition with wit and intelligence .

Round About Hogarth runs at the Tabard Theatre from 4 to 21 February.
