New Artwork to Take its Place on W4th Plinth

This Saturday sees an 'experimentation with maths' unveiled

‘Paris Study No 1’ is due to depart

January 10, 2026

Abundance London will unveil the next artwork on the W4th Plinth next Saturday, (17 January) , at 11am, continuing one of Chiswick’s most distinctive community-led public art traditions.

Residents are invited to gather at Turnham Green Terrace for the installation, where musicians from Chiswick School will perform as part of the event. The new piece will replace Paris Study by Philip Michael Wolfson, which has occupied the plinth since last year.

The W4th Plinth, curated by Abundance London, showcases a new large-scale artwork roughly every six months. Each piece is shortlisted by a jury and then put to a public vote, with the winning work displayed on the brick wall of the railway embankment overlooking the piazza. Previous installations have included photography, abstract compositions and community-created works, reflecting the breadth of submissions the project attracts.

Abundance London describes the incoming artwork as the product of “persistent experimentation with maths” by a creator who is not a mathematician. The piece emerged from a long, offline process of trial, error and visual exploration, rather than digital or AI-assisted methods. According to the organisers, the work evolved from curiosity and play, eventually generating a series of configurations that were refined into the final image.

Saturday’s unveiling will also include a toast to mark the latest addition to Chiswick’s growing collection of public art initiatives. The organisers cite a line from Kurt Vonnegut as a guiding spirit for the project: “Nobody will stop you from creating. Do it tonight. Do it tomorrow. That is the way to make your soul grow… The kick of creation is the act of creating, not anything that happens afterward.”

The W4th Plinth has become a familiar landmark since its launch, forming part of a wider trail of public artworks along Turnham Green Terrace.

Abundance London is encouraging local people to attend the unveiling, celebrate the new installation and support the artists whose work continues to shape the evolving outdoor gallery.
