Members of the Southfields Grid Residents’ Association (SGRA) were honoured in Westminster this week, celebrating five decades of grassroots activism and neighbourhood advocacy in Southfields.
Founded in the early 1970s by local residents including Nick Steiner and former Chair Tina Thompson, SGRA emerged in response to concerns about large-scale council buyouts and redevelopment plans that threatened the area’s character. Since then, the group has worked to preserve green spaces, engage with planning decisions, and foster a strong sense of community identity.
SGRA continues to be a cornerstone of civic life in Southfields, led by longstanding Chair Charles Runcie and supported by a network of 19 Road Reps. Its regular activities include a widely-read newsletter, community art and garden competitions, seasonal fairs, and events for older residents—all aimed at strengthening ties between neighbours and representing local interests.
The association’s 50th anniversary was marked by a special visit to Parliament, where members were joined by MP Fleur Anderson and former MP Justine Greening in recognition of the group’s sustained efforts over the years.
Ms Anderson presented gifts to members of the SGRA Executive Committee and said, “It was a real honour to welcome SGRA members to Parliament and celebrate 50 years of their incredible work. It is one of the oldest Residents Associations in London. Southfields is a thriving, close-knit community – thanks in no small part to residents coming together to stand up for it. I really enjoy the regular newsletter, Harvest Fair, annual tea party for older people, local art Fair, Winter Wonderland, front garden competition and close work with the local police team and businesses. Long may that spirit continue!”
Reflecting on the occasion, Councillor Tina Thompson’s legacy as a councillor and former Mayor of Wandsworth (1997–98) was highlighted as emblematic of the deep civic engagement fostered by SGRA since its founding. The organisation remains active in partnership with local police, businesses, and cultural groups, regularly hosting events such as the Winter Wonderland and Harvest Fair.
SGRA’s commitment to its founding aim “to preserve, maintain and enhance the community known as the Grid” continues to shape local life in Southfields—one front garden competition and planning meeting at a time.
